John Tate's father was Keri Tate's husband during a brief, failed marriage after she changed her identity from that of Laurie Strode. The couple had a son named John in August 1981. John's father was said to be abusive and prone to vices, such as chain-smoking and methadone addiction. Keri soon left him and established herself as the headmistress of Hillcrest Academy. His parenting attitude towards his son remained incredibly lax, to the extent that his card for John's seventeenth birthday was posted two months late.[1]
